Secure Those Blogs!
There have been many times when I have encountered many webmasters that have had their blogged hacked or stolen from them. I have too had my site hacked (wasn't exactly a blog before) and I was devastated. Not because of the site (well of course), but of other problems that occurred like a warning from the hosting, the safety to my visitors and how it showed that my site could not be trusted. It took me a while to gain back that trust from time to time to my visitors as well as my signed up members. I was hit by a browser attack exploit which meant that every visitor got infected as well too. I cleaned it up and ever since I have never had another attack like that.

This can occur to anyone's site and especially blog. Blogs are the most targeted for Spam and Exploits. Some of you might agree because some bloggers receive tons of spam that are ranging from a couple like 3 to 100 a day! That can be a real pain if you have to separate spam from real comments. Exploits happen from time to time and do not occur commonly, but this doesn’t mean that should relax, security is a must to everyone and especially to bloggers since they face everyday spam (most, not all). Exploits are the worst of the worst, if you have been hacked, there are several ways to protect yourself. And sometimes hackers get in without a trace! How can this happen? Well, lets just say that this occurs right in front of the user's face and computer. Security risks are a huge negative impact to blog's security such as viruses and especially keyloggers! Keyloggers are the worst security risk to mess with. They catch every single keystroke you type using your keyboard against you. They can login with a perfect try with the login YOU provided.

Keylogger :(
Now let's get down to the securing part. If you have absolutely no Anti-Virus or any sort of Security protection software on your computer, you have to protect your data as well as your passwords and logins. In one of my other articles about phishing , I explained how Norton has an integrated toolbar that it adds on your browser to protect you against phishing, but not only does it protect you against phishing, it has a Login feature that allows you to make logins or every time you login on a new page it saves your login (with your permission to deny or accept) so you won't have to again, it also types it in automatically so that keyloggers won't be able to catch those keystrokes (since the keyboard is not used).

Another way to secure your blog from Exploits and especially Brute Force is to come up with strong passwords (and I mean using symbols, letters, numbers, and capitals). Also be sure not to allow writing permissions and set private files to 644 (which denies write access to anyone). This is good for avoiding exploits that can screw your whole site up if you let an exploit go through.

Bottom Line: Securing your site these ways are useful but nothing is 100% secure against today's exploits and security flaws. The only thing we can do to secure our sites is to make it more secure than regular and not ignore security warnings when given to us. Stay safe, and be careful for those pesky keyloggers as well as sites that can drop security risks.
